A City Council Education Committee hearing Tuesday featured testimony from a Brooklyn mother advocating for aid to children who suffered psychological damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Gladys Nunez, a mother of two special needs children, appeared with two representatives of Legal Services to ask Chairman Robert Jackson for hel

Nunez described what life has been like for her son since November. “I’ve spoken with the principal twice in the last two weeks,” she said.  “He goes to school and the teachers tell me that he’s not focusing. They ask him ‘, how are you doing?’ and he will not answer.”

Nunez added that at home her son Jonathan, 16, found it hard to sleep and feared that they will soon be forced to leave their home.

The Nunez family lives on the fourth floor of an apartment building in Red Hook, air jordan 12 one of the places hit hardest by Sandy. Even on the fourth floor, the building has taken considerable damage. “My walls are down,” Nunez said. “My bathroom is destroyed. My kitchen is destroyed. We use a machine to keep light in the apartment

“Johnathan needs help,” she pleaded.” I spoke with lawyers, doctors… He was doing well before all of this. Now he missed a month of school and everything has changed.”

Jackson, a Manhattan Democrat,  offered personally to assist Nunez with her situation. But a Legal Aid representative said, “Ms. Nunez is only one of the many that are suffering from these conditions. The city needs pay attention to the situation. Bringing her today to be the voice for them is a step in showing that more has to be done.”
