Brooklyn Teen Gets 15 Years in Murder Case

A teenager was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday, in the shooting death of another teenager at a party in Brooklyn last year.

Defendant Jahiem Spruill pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, and second-degree possession of a firearm with each sentence to run concurrently.

Members of the victim’s family addressed the court at the hearing.

“I lost a part of me because you chose to take his life, said the victim’s mother Tianna Williams. “We won’t get to hear his voice again.”

Spruill, who was 17-years-old at the time of the shooting, fatally shot Iquan Williams, 16, at a party in Brownsville on Jan. 4, 2014 after what police sources say was a neighborhood gang-related dispute. His parents said they believed he was not the target of the attack.

Spruill made a half-hearted apology to the family.

“I’m sorry for your loss,” he said, “But it’s crazy that I got 15 years for me defending myself.”
