Donald Trump opposed the transgender bathroom bill passed in North Carolina –a bill most Republican politicians favor– at a town meeting Thursday sponsored by NBC TV’s Today Show.
“People should use the bathroom they feel is appropriate,” he said in response to a question about the contentious issue.
“Leave it the way it is, there have been very few complaints the way it is,” Trump said, “North Carolina did something very strong and they’re paying a big price.”
When asked if he has any transgender employees, Trump said he did not know but he would allow them to use any bathroom they wished in the Trump Tower.
“We love you, everybody,” Trump said to an energetic crowd, as they chanted in unison, “U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A.”
The leading Republican presidential candidate continued to showcase his relatively more modest demeanor and “presidential” style in the wake of his overpowering victory in the New York primary on Tuesday.
In other news, the treasury department’s decision to replace President Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman on the front of the $20 bill has Trump thinking.
“I think it is rough when you take Andrew Jackson off the $20 bill,” he said. “I don’t like seeing it, I think it’s pure political correctness. I would like to see another domination, like the $2 bill.”
The real estate mogul-turned politician was asked to analyze his popularity as a candidate.
“I know the people of the country and they want to see things happen and quickly,” said Trump. “I had confidence.”
He added: “If I didn’t hit very hard I wouldn’t be sitting here today. I will be presidential soon and you will be so bored.”
Audience member and Trump skeptic, Jamie Rend, said he was “surprised” at how far he has gotten and “I don’t think he is the best person for the job.”
James and Maria Marling, viewers and supporters from Miami, were “Very excited.”
“I like the idea that there might be a businessman in office instead of a politician,” said James.
“He brings pride to America and he has had a positive impact in our community,” said Maria, who is Mexican.
Another Trump skeptic and viewer, Linda, said, “His comments are embarrassing and I don’t think he would be a good fit.”
Andrew Sullivan, Trump supporter and ex-employee, wanted to know how he would avoid pitfalls of the past regarding Isis and the war?
“I was against the war, we would have been better off if we avoided the Middle East…we have to knock the hell out of them, we are going to get rid of Isis,” he said.
“He’s not a politician,” said supporter and bystander Leicha, which is what she said she liked about him.
Some undecided voters still came to see the frontrunner.
“It gave me a better perspective, he was a little clearer on the issues,” said Mike from Maine.
