A hearing was held Thursday that set the trial date for a transient food stamp collector accused in a 1995 West Village rape case.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Bonnie Wittner set the trial date for April 14 and denied bail.

The defendant, Joseph Giardala, 44, was quiet during the hearing.

Giardala, according to the indictment, was caught at LAX airport, where his DNA was tested amongst 17,000 old rape kits because the city was collecting DNA profiles for unsolved cases.

Prosecutors found that Giardala had multiple credit cards and licenses, which he used to buy 230 plane tickets within a matter of a year.

When his DNA profile matched the 20-year-old rape case he was extradited to New York where he was charged with the knifepoint rape of a 25-year-old woman.
