The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the 9/11-memorial site on Tuesday, one of the last stops on their three-day visit to the Big Macintosh.
As the royal family made their way from the 9/11 museum to 1 World Trade Center, New Yorkers eager to get a glimpse of the couple watched in awe.
Despite the cold rain and approaching nor’easter, the couple walked along one of the outdoor reflecting pools. The Duchess, who wore a fuchsia colored Mulberry pea coat and Seraphine maternity dress, left a bouquet of flowers on one of the memorials.
A note on the flowers read:
“In sorrowful memory of those who died on 11th September and in admiration of the courage of those who rebuilt.”
One onlooker was excited about seeing the Duchess for the first time, even tough she was British.
“She’s great, we love her back home,” said Nicki, who declined to give her last name.
As the couple left the memorial site, Prince William, dressed in a black suit, carried a Hotel Carlyle umbrella, which is where the couple stayed for short visit to the Empire State.
After visiting the memorial site, the royal couple, who are expecting their second child, returned to the Carlyle where more New Yorkers anxious to see them waited in the rain.
“It’s a special occasion to have the royal family visit New York, being such young representatives,” said Edna, of the Bronx.
Edna, who also declined to give her last name, said that she left a doctor appointment for the chance to see the royal duo, praised the couple.
“She is very special, very beautiful, very smart,” she gushed. “And he is unspeakable (sic). I like to get a glimpse of them. Let me cease the moment.”
Since arriving on Sunday the Duke and Duchess have sometimes made separate appearances. The Prince made a brief visit to the White House Monday morning to talk with President Obama. Kate, meanwhile, traveled to the Northside Center for children with the first lady of New York, Chirlane McCray. The Duchess, five months pregnant, sat in a classroom and helped kids wrap presents.
Later, the couple reunited to attend a function held by the Royal Foundation in appreciation of the conservation work Wildlife Partners and Tusk Trust has done. Former Secretary of State and likely presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, who attended the reception, met and spent time with the Duke and Duchess before leaving.
After a full day of traveling to meet with dignitaries, the royal couple went to Brooklyn to take in a Nets game. Sitting front row in the Barclay Center, the Duke and Duchess were introduced to local royalty rapper Jay Z and his wife Beyonce. Before leaving, the couple took pictures with Lebron James, who presented them with basketball jerseys and cupcakes.
The royal family was scheduled to meet with Mayor de Blasio for an event at the Empire State building and later attend a gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, before traveling back across the pond.
