A Brooklyn man charged with shooting a Nassau County police officer has accepted a plea deal that would land him in jail for 25 to 35 years, sources said Tuesday.
Cong Xu and an accomplice Renhang Qiu were arrested in August 2013 after the pair broke into a New Hyde Park home, and Xu fired at responding policemen, hitting officer Mohit Arora once in the groin.
Xu was expected to be sentenced to 25 years for assault, and five years for burglary. Under the deal he would not be charged with attempted murder. Xu is a Chinese national and will most likely be deported back to China after serving his sentence, sources said.
Outside the County Courthouse in Mineola officer Arora stood with Nassau County PBA President James Carver as he described his life after the injury. Carver praised the officer’s actions in arriving at the scene so quickly, “that the perpetrator was still in the house.”
Asked about facing the man that had shot him in court, Arora said it “was nice he was sentenced to a long time,” and he himself was “ready to move on.”
Of his family he said, “We went through a lot; it was a long recovery for me, a lot of pain, it’s tough on my family, but we’re going to move on to better things.”
Cong Xu’s sentencing was expected on April 2nd.
