Mt. Sinai Doc Faces Sex Abuse Charges

A former physician at Mount Sinai, accused of sexually assaulting four female patients, was charged with sexual abuse in the first and third degree at Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday.

Court documents indicate that 45-year-old David Newman, a prominent medical practitioner, former U.S. Army major and author, sexually abused the victims during their visits to the emergency room. The incidents took place between August 2015 and January 2016 and the patients ages ranged from 18 to 29 years old.

Newman pleaded not guilty to the charges before Judge Michael J. Obus.

“As alleged in this indictment, four young women who came to the hospital for medical treatment were sexually abused by the very doctor entrusted with their care,” Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., said in a press release. “One was sedated to the point of being physically helpless – a nightmare scenario for any patient to endure.”

In the latest incident, Newman allegedly performed a lewd act on 29-year-old patient on January 11, 2016.

According to the young woman, she came to Mount Sinai around 10:30 p.m. due to pain in one of her shoulders. She said that Newman injected her with a second dose of morphine, and then sexually assaulted her. More specifically, he fondled her breasts, masturbated and ejaculated onto her face.

“I would like to thank these brave women for their strength in coming forward,” Vance said, “and encourage any other additional potential victims to call our Sex Crimes Hotline at 212-335-9373.”

Newman was free on bail.
