At a press conference at the Fashion Institute of Technology on Thursday Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney and Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen announced a new congressional report showing that New York City’s fashion industry is a multi-billion-dollar industry employing thousands of people.

The report, issued by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, types New York as “the fashion capital of the world.”

“This is a time when our city absolutely shines because New York is one of the greatest fashion capitals…is the greatest in the United States of America,” said Maloney,a Manhattan Democrat, as another successful season of New York Fashion Week came to a close. “We are the dominant fashion industry in our country… by far the creative energy is here in New York.”

The report lists over 900 fashion companies headquartered in the city, employing over 183,000 people. These companies also pay $11 billion in wages, create over $2 billion in tax revenue, the report adds. In addition, there are roughly 7,000 designers working here.

New York Fashion Week itself reels in over $900 million to the city.

Maloney also said that over $370 billion was spent on fashion in America in the past year.

In efforts to support young fashion designers from New York, Maloney also said that she plans to identify a series of upcoming NY-based designers, who specifically create garments, to participate in the trade show.
