Brooklyn Mother Arrested in 1-Month-Old Infant’s Death

Authorities reported on Thursday that a Brooklyn mother was arrested and will now be charged with the murder of her infant son.

The arrest actually occurred late Wednesday, following months of investigation into the death.

Elsa Sanchez, 21, was arrested at her home in East Flatbush, on E. 32nd St.

This comes seven months after one-month-old Daquan Vaughn-Sanchez was found unresponsive in the Sanchez home. The father (name not yet revealed to Brooklyn News Service) had returned home on March 8 to find the infant there alone with the mother.

Medics rushed the infant to SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where he died two days later.

Last week the New York Daily News reported the city medical examiner had deemed the death a homicide, with trauma to the head and neck. The paper also reported that a few days after the death the mother had posted on Facebook: “It hurts me that my first child is no longer with me . . .”

Sanchez has now been charged with reckless assault of a child, acting in a manner injurious to a child and manslaughter. A spokesperson for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office said Sanchez would likely be arraigned Thursday night in Brooklyn Criminal Court.
