Toys in the Pandemic

An interactive Barbie?

No, it’s not what you’re thinking but it’s one of the hot new toys unveiled on Thursday by the Toy Insider Holiday of Play @ Home, a virtual event presenting over 100 of “this year’s hottest holiday toys”.

The annual event was  converted to an online format in response to the coronavirus pandemic, allowing customers and critics to go from booth to booth just like an actual convention.

Toy Insiders prominently featured the Mattel Barbie Color Reveal Slumber Party fun set for ages 3+. This is no ordinary baby doll, but an interactive experience from unboxing to playtime. The mystery is in the box, as you don’t know which specific Barbie, or Chelsea you’re getting, not until you swirl her in a glass of water where shimmering paint reveals which doll you’ve got.

Times have changed since I, was a little girl heckling my mother in Toys R Us for a Malibu, or Ballerina Barbie. But then again I wish my Barbie had half as many features. The set comes with a Chelsea doll, and 50 accessories from hair clothes, sleeping bags, and food.

Another hot toy promoted was the LEGO Super Mario Adventure Starter Course. Some buyers might consider $59.99 a steep price to pay for a set of building blocks but the toy allows the buyer to build a lever inspired by the Mario game and play with the interactive LEGO Mario figure.

The event did not focus only on the flashy and the new but also on classic toys.

“The Hess truck’s back, and it’s better than ever,” says the Hess Corporation.

That seems a comforting notion in a year of tragedy and unease.
