Rockettes Can’t Kick About Xmas

By JENNIFER SZULMAN

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Christmas cheer (and other matter?) was spread on asphalt Tuesday as the Rockettes  welcomed on the city streets the animals that will take center stage during the “Living Nativity” scene of the Christmas Spectacular held at Radio City Music Hall.

The sheep, donkey and camels made a pit stop before their first day of rehearsals to bask in the spotlight at a press conference just outside Radio City, standing alongside several eye-catching dancers draped head to toe in beads, sequins and glitter.

“The animals are really part of the cast,” said Naomi Kakuk, a Rockette now performing in her sixth season. “We love them, we’re like a family. The Christmas Spectacular is a huge production and involves so many different layers of talent, scenery and lights. It’s such a special experience and makes Christmas really memorable.”

The “Living Nativity” scene has been a part of the Christmas Spectacular since 1933 and has become a popular part of the production. This is going to be the 17th year that one of  the camels, Ted, has been in the show.

This season’s production will also feature a new storyline and the return of the classic number, “Rag Dolls,” a high energy tap number starring the Rockettes in unison. “Rag Dolls” first appeared in the show in 1940 but has now been completely re-imagined for the 2014 show, organizers said.

The Rockettes are one of the most famous precision dance companies in the United States and have been performing at Radio City Music Hall since 1932.  During the Christmas Spectacular, the women perform up to five shows a day in a two-month run. Despite the grueling schedule, the performers say it’s well worth it to both be able to fulfill their dreams and celebrate Christmas.

“The Rockettes are American icons,” said Kakuk. “To be part of that legacy is pretty special.”

The dancers seemed psyched.

“Coming to the Christmas Spectacular is such a wonderful tradition and a great thing to bring the entire family to,: said Rockette Natalie Reid. “It really puts you in the Christmas spirit, with Santa guiding you through the entire show.”

Tickets for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular are now on sale at Radiocitychristmas.com or at the box office. The show is scheduled run from November 7 through December 31.
