Cabbie Accused of Rape Nixes Plea Deal

The New York City cabbie charged with raping a woman in 2012 declined the offer of a plea from the Brooklyn District Attorney in criminal court Tuesday.

Gurmeet Singh was accused of raping a 26-year-old woman in the back of his taxicab in May of 2012.

The Brooklyn District Attorney offered 10 years in prison but the defendant rejected the plea. A first-degree rape charge carries a sentence of 15 years in prison.

Singh was busted when his DNA matched that of DNA associated with the victim. She said that while intoxicated, she was bound, raped, and robbed in the back of a yellow taxicab.

The indictment said that police set up a sting on Singh at the Taxi and Limousine Commission office on suspicion of another rape in a taxi in September 2012. Undercover officers offered him a cup of water and used the DNA from that cup. It came up negative on the September attack but positive on the May 2012 assault.

The married father of two admitted to police that he paid prostitutes but maintained his innocence in the rape case.

Singh’s hearing was postponed to March 18 when a trial date was expected to be set.
